Assistant Teacher Position Opening

Position Description:  

Assistant teacher for preschool classroom

Part time-M-F morning (8:45-1:00)

August 22-May 19


Position Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, Characteristics, and Experience:

Knowledge of early childhood development

Experience working with children 2-6

Experience or knowledge of play-based or Montessori preschool methods

Ability to work with a lead teacher and parents in a cooperative format

Sensitive to individual and cultural diversity

Must be able to maintain confidentiality

Effective written and oral communication

Clear criminal and child abuse background check through DHS upon hire and every 2 years thereafter.  

Must submit fingerprints to FBI for a national criminal background check and repeat after 4 years.

Complete CPR, First Aid, Universal Precautions and Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse trainings upon hire.

In first year of employment complete 12 hours of training provided by DHS either on-line or in-person.

Complete 10 hours of training (approved by DHS and lead teacher) after the first year of employment


Classroom Responsibilities:

Assist lead teacher in providing appropriate early childhood education experiences

Assist in promoting and supervising the healthy emotional, social, intellectual and physical development of each child

Assist in evaluation of children in preparation of parent conferences

Purchase items needed for daily snacks (usually done on a weekly basis)

Schedule field trips or assist parent field trip coordinator

Assist with Lunch Bunch as requested

Assist parent volunteers in the classroom

Assist in the arrangement and upkeep of the classroom and all classroom equipment and materials

Help children establish good habits of toileting and personal hygiene

Assist in supervising all activities to ensure safety of each child at all times

Attend fall parent orientation and spring end of year celebration

Optional attendance of monthly preschool board meetings

Assume lead teacher responsibilities in the absence of the lead teacher



Must have reliable transportation and auto insurance

Able to stand at least 4 hours

Able to bend, stoop, and lift up to 60 pounds

Able to sit on the floor for extended periods of time



High School diploma or GED

Experience working with children ages 2-6

Prefer a 2 year degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
